Jan. 9, 2009 – The V.I. Waste Management Authority informs St. Croix residents of the start of the Anguilla Landfill Fire Extinguishment Project. Work will begin on Monday, Jan. 12, to prepare for the extinguishing of the underground fires at the Anguilla Landfill by the VIWMA contractor, Williams Fire & Hazard Control Inc. of Texas, according to a press release from Executive Director of VIWMA May Adams Cornwall.
The contractor, which is an industrial firefighting company with extensive expertise in the assessment and extinguishing of underground fires, has brought specialized fire-fighting equipment needed to fight subterranean fires to St. Croix.
VIWMA has coordinated efforts with several agencies to ensure the public’s safety and health, including the Departments of Public Safety, Health, Planning and Natural Resources, Fire Services, the VI Port Authority and VITEMA.
Those persons and solid-waste haulers utilizing the Anguilla Landfill during the project are asked to follow the directions at the security checkpoints and of the flagmen and spotters when entering the landfill and to reduce vehicular speed. All haulers are advised that there may be slight delays in operations while in the landfill and so their understanding and cooperation is requested.
VIWMA apologizes for any inconvenience that these temporary modifications in operations may cause and will notify the public when operations return to normal.
