Dec. 15, 2008 — They were not expected to make the finals, but after defeating the powerful Thymes Squad 10-8 over the weekend, the Obama Mamas are just one victory away from winning the championship.
Sherry Simmonds was dominant on the mound and at the plate in leading her young team to victory. Thymes pitcher Gelisa James got the loss.
Simmonds kept the Thymes off the board over the first two innings. Meanwhile, her team got one run in the bottom of the first inning on her RBI ground out and three more in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Mona Barnes, a sacrifice fly by Simmonds, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Leah Davila to lead 4-0 at the end of two innings.
The Thymes finally broke through against Simmonds in the top of the third, plating three runs on a two-run double by Zahra O'Reilly and an RBI double by Jennifer Brady to pull within 4-3. The Obama Mamas came up empty in the bottom of the inning.
However, the Obama Mamas were back in the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth after the Thymes failed to score in their half of the inning. They scored three runs in the bottom of the inning on bases-loaded walks drawn by Denise Baker and Davila and a Thymes miscue to lead 7-3 after four innings.
Lisa Thomas' two-run single in the top of the fifth brought the Thymes to within two runs of the lead at 7-5, and that would be the score heading into the sixth inning as the Obama Mamas went in order in the bottom of the inning.
The Thymes took their first lead of the contest in the top of the sixth inning at 8-7 when they rallied for three runs on a two-run double by O'Reilly and an RBI single by Kanisha Woodrup. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Obama Mamas plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Simmonds and a Thymes error to retake the lead at 10-8, which turned out to be the final score of the game as the Thymes went quietly in the top of the seventh.
Top hitters for the Obama Mamas were Simmonds, 2 for 2 with four RBIs, and Baker and Barnes, both 1 for 3 with one RBI apiece. For the Thymes, O'Reilly went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Inocencia Bermudez went 4 for 5.
