Donors Join Forces to Upgrade Trauma Care in the Territory/Public Presentation Postponed

Oct. 12, 2008 – Thanks to combined giving from the Charaf Family Fund, Driehaus Community Fund II, Robert O'Connor Fund and QT Investment Managers, more than $60,000 in technologically advanced emergency-room equipment and training has been provided to expand the emergency service capabilities at the Schneider Regional Medical Center. The public presentation of the equipment, originally scheduled for Oct. 16, has been postponed until further notice due to weather conditions
The new equipment includes a Level One Fluid Warming System, Micro Maxx Ultrasound System, and a Reliance 7000 Ophthalmology Power Chair and Projector System. The expense of training for medical staff in the use of the equipment has also been included in the generous donation.
The purchase of specialized trauma equipment is part of an overall commitment of donors at the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands to expand the emergency services available at Schneider Regional Medical Center and upgrade the level of the hospital's trauma care. The foundation is also working with hospital officials and QT Investment to bring training from the Brain Trauma Foundation to medical staff in the territory. In a previous major initiative to advance the territory's trauma care, CFVI built the Charaf Family Fund Heliport at RLS Hospital in 2001.
Ricardo J. Charaf, Charaf Family Fund donor and chairman of CFVI, said, "It is the Community Foundation's mission to do whatever we can to improve the quality of life in the Virgin Islands for both present and future generations. Trauma injuries have the greatest impact on children and young adults. This was one of our main considerations in moving ahead with this important project."
