Oct. 6, 2008 — The Rotary Club of St. John will honor three St. John residents at a dinner to be held Oct. 25 at the Ocean Grill Restaurant on St. John.
The dinner begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, with seating limited to 100 people.
"We're honoring them because of their service to St. John," said Rotary Club member Bill Willigerod.
The Rotary's motto is service above self, and the recipients exemplify this quality, Willigerod said.
Dr. Elizabeth Barot will receive a vocational-service award.
"Regardless of the time of day and circumstances, she does not lose her sense of humor, compassion, empathy, or professionalism with patients and coworkers alike," Willigerod said.
Barot moved to St. John in 1985 to work at the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center. Usually the only doctor at the community health center until some years ago, she kept St. John residents healthy through Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Marilyn in 1995, despite extremely difficult circumstances. She continues to work at Myrah Keating.
Bob Malacarne and Moe Chabuz will receive community-service awards.
Chabuz, who owns Skinny Legs Bar and Restaurant in Coral Bay, has long contributed to the community. As soon as he and the late Doug Sica opened Skinny Legs in 1991, they hooked up the nearby Fire Services facility to the bar's satellite dish so the fire fighters could watch TV while on duty, Willigerod said.
The good deeds continued, with contributions to various St. John organizations and groups for their fund raisers. Additionally, Chabuz gave many St. John youths their first job opportunities, Willigerod said.
Malacarne, the St. John Rescue training officer, goes to the mainland every year for refresher and recertification training. He then goes on to provide training to other St. John Rescue members and to community organizations and businesses.
"He returns home to take care of St. John," Willigerod said.
