Human Services Celebrates Deaf Awareness Week

Sept. 19, 2008 – The Department of Human Services Division of Disabilities and Rehabilitation will celebrate Deaf Awareness Week Sept. 22-27. The culture, heritage and language unique to those who are deaf will be highlighted through activities and programs offered during the week.
Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, information tables at the Knud Hansen Complex lobby will provide free hand outs and paraphernalia about deaf culture. The public is invited to gain a better understanding of the distinctive communication tools used by the deaf and hard of hearing. The free information will eradicate any misconceptions about the deaf culture.
The basics of sign language will be taught at a Lunch and Learn from 12:10-12:40 p.m., on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.
