Sept. 4, 2008 – The territorial Voices that Count Conference: Self-Advocacy for People with Disabilities and their Families will bring together people with disabilities, service providers, advocates, local legislators and aspirants to help the community make systemic changes. The first day will focus on creating questions to ask the legislators on the second day of the conference. There will be five topics: health/mental health, employment, education, accessibility to housing and transportation, and civil rights. A respected keynote speaker will highlight emerging and current legal national issues in the field of disabilities rights and an equally respected local advocate will report the status of the territory in regards to disabilities rights.
Voices that Count Conference dates and locations: September 29-30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the UVI St. Croix Campus, Northwest Wing Great Hall
October 2 – 3, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., UVI St. Thomas Campus, Administration and Conference Center
There is no fee for this conference, but space is limited on both islands. Transporation will be provided to individuals with disabilities who qualify.
