Brothers Nailed For Stealing From Hardware Store

Aug. 24, 2008 — Two brothers, one working for the V.I. Police Department and the other for the Bureau of Corrections, were arrested over the weekend and charged with grand larceny for stealing more than $5,000 worth of merchandise from the Gallows Bay Hardware Store on St. Croix.
According to a police statement, Earl Yahn, 27, was already on unpaid leave from the V.I. Police Department after being arrested in late February on another unrelated grand larceny charge. His brother, Carl Yahn Jr., was also on leave from the Bureau of Corrections after being charged in mid-March for third degree assault (domestic violence) and possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence.
The two were arrested again Saturday, and charged with stealing from the hardware store where Earl Yahn was working as a contracted security guard.
While it is "unfortunate" that the two law enforcement agencies have been "stained" by these arrests, it does show that no one — not even government officers — are above the law, Police Commissioner James H. McCall said in the statement.
"This is further evidence that the deJongh administration and the V.I. Police Department will not tolerate or attempt to cover up wrongdoing by police officers and other government employees," McCall said. "We understand that the Yahn brothers are innocent until proven guilty — however, I am confident that the Criminal Investigation Bureau, working closely with the Attorney General's Office, has a solid case against these two."
The Yahn brothers were unable to post $25,000 bail and have been remanded to Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending an advice of rights hearing.
