Employees of the Ritz-Carlton Donate School Supplies to Children in Foster Care

Aug. 19, 2008 – For the second consecutive year, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas, partnered with the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services to provide necessary school supplies to children in the Division of Children and Families Foster Care Program. Representatives of the resort's employees will present the backpacks full of pencils, notebooks, calculators and other back-to-school items to the division's office at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Human Services provided lists of needed items for 81 children to The Ritz-Carlton, and employees from every department of the resort donated the needed supplies. The first names and ages of the children were given so personalized notes written by the individual donators could also be included.
"Our ladies and gentlemen were very responsive to this cause and are proud to aide in the education and development of foster children on St. Thomas. We recognize that supplies and tools are an important part of providing children with a proper education, and know that it is one way to positively impact the future of the island," said Marc Langevin, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton.
Participation in "Backpacks for Success" is just one of many corporate responsibility initiatives that encompass The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas Community Footprints program. The resort's employees also participate in The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the Boy Scouts Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, and community clean-up programs across St. Thomas. In addition, Community Footprints has recently expanded to offer volunteering opportunities to resort guests through the Discover the Mangroves program that involves tourists in a hands-on mangrove protection event, with proceeds going to the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
