Rebels Hold Off Comeback by WAPA Shockers

May 28, 2008 — The Housing, Parks and Recreation Rebels withstood a late power surge by the WAPA Shockers Tuesday night to win 11-7 in the Governmental Co-ed Softball League at the Renholt Jackson Sport Complex in Estate Whim.
The Shockers put up a good fight, but in the end lacked the necessary juice to overcome a more powerful Rebels squad.
Batting first, the Shockers took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Nazzario Navarro and a sacrifice fly by Sylvester Blake. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Rebels responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead after one inning. The Rebels scored five runs on a solo shot by Collin King, a two-run single by Shay Roberts, an RBI single by Vigillio Diaz and a bases-loaded walk drawn by David Clarke.
After the Shockers failed to score in the top of the second inning, the Rebels extended their lead to four runs at 6-2, coming up with a run on a sac fly off the bat of Wayne Scott.
After a scoreless third inning, the Shockers picked up a run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run off the bat of Navarro to trail 6-3. the Rebels was equal to the task in the bottom of the inning as they also picked up a run on an RBI double off the bat of Leroy Simmonds to push the lead back to four at 7-3.
The score would stay that way until the sixth inning, when the Shockers had a power surge, scoring four runs in the top of the inning to knot the game at seven. They scored four runs on a two-run home run by Blake and RBI singles by Jennifer Brady and Juan Belardo. The Rebels again were equal to the task as they also came up with four runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Ellerton Maynard, an RBI single by Roberts and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Sherry Simmonds to again lead by four at 11-7 heading to the seventh and final inning.
The Shockers, facing a four-run deficit in the top of the seventh, could not mount much of a threat, and they came up empty to fall by a final score of 11-7.
Diaz picked up the win on the hill for the Rebels, while Otilio Geron got the loss for the Shockers. Top hitters for the Rebels were Roberts, 2 for 4 with three RBIs; Dowling, 3 for 4; and King, 2 for 4. For the Shockers, Blake went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Navarro went 3 for 4 with a home run and one RBI, and Brady went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
