Feb. 19, 2008 — High school seniors who are dependents of Government Employees' Retirement System members are eligible to apply for a GERS scholarship.
The four-year scholarships, administered by the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, go to one student from St. Thomas, one from Croix and one from St. John.
"St. John students have an advantage and ought to make the most of it," said Community Foundation President Dee Baecher-Brown on Tuesday.
The advantage for St. John students is because there are far less students competing for the scholarships, she said. Last year no St. John students were eligible.
Eligibility depends on academic achievement and financial need. Students must have grade-point averages of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Scholarship applications are due April. 4.
Students may attend any accredited college or university, Baecher-Brown said. The amount of the scholarship is tied to tuition at the University of the Virgin Islands, which currently runs $3,500 a year.
The scholarship money comes from a fund set up in 1992 by the financial-management companies that manage GERS assets.
Applications are available online at cfvi.net, by calling the Community Foundation office at 774-6031, or at GERS offices. The St. Thomas office is on Veterans Drive. The St. Croix office is in Orange Grove.
