Feb. 12, 2008 — Set sail with the Coral Bay Yacht Club March 15 for the group's "mostly" annual flotilla, which raises money to fund improvements to the Guy Benjamin School in Coral Bay.
"It's a good time for a great cause," said yacht club member Dave Dostall, who is organizing the event.
Last year the organization gave the school $16,000 to fund desks, chairs, computers and a new refrigerator, he said. It's important to support the school because it's right in the yacht club's backyard, he said.
"We enjoy working with them," Dostall said.
The flotilla will sail from Coral Bay to Vie's Beach on St. John's East End. Meet at the dinghy dock in Coral Bay at 9 a.m.
About a dozen boats will head out from Coral Bay to sail around for two or three hours before anchoring off Vie's Beach, Dostall said. The return trip takes about half an hour.
The fee is $40 for the sail. Bring your own beverages.
"It's the best deal for a day sail, and it's a party with a purpose," Dostall said.
Silver Cloud, a 107-foot, three-masted schooner usually moored in Coral Harbor, will take Guy Benjamin students and teachers to the party. If you want to drive to Vie's instead of sailing, admission is $20. Admission cost for sailors and drivers includes a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes and West Indian specialties.
Music, which starts at noon, is by Ko Ko and the Sunshine Band.
Sign up for the sail by March 14 at Connections in Coral Bay and Cruz Bay. There is no need to sign up if you're driving.
