I recently saw the subject article in the Source, it reminded me of a plan I though of a few years back. My family has been in the Recycling Industry since 1911. I am presently employed at a private Garbage Transfer Station on Long Island, New York. I have utilized my Recycling experience to help market the recyclables that are in every day garbage.
The plan that I previously mentioned, when I was on holiday in Nassau, Bahamas, I noticed that the garbage cans were filled with multiple items that back in the USA, I was purchasing and recycling and selling to both domestic and export markets. I broke away from my holiday and went to visit the landfill. What I did find was that the items that arrived were mostly covered over and disposal. It seemed someone sold the idea of recycling, since they had all the equipment place, but were not operating it. I later found out, a consultant sold them on the idea and could not produce the markets, after he received his fee. This made no sense to me everyday ships arrive with containers that have goods that are required on all of the islands, not just Nassau. It was my belief that the garbage could be sorted and separated, by item and loaded back into these now empty containers and sold to markets. The value of all Recyclables is at an all time high and the values do not seen to want to go down. The construction items such as wood and vegetation could be turned into Compost and Mulch products to be used within the island.
When I saw the article the in the Source, I thought that a beautiful island like St. Thomas could use this plan.
