Brief: Road Named in Honor of Cariso Singer

Nov. 20, 2007 — The Mahogany Road (Route 76) in Frederiksted has been renamed the Ethel McIntosh Memorial Drive.
The honor of having the west end road renamed for her "is a worthy one for a woman who was recognized at the Alton A. Adams Music Research Institute Summit of Tradition Bearers for contributions to the musical and cultural heritage of the Virgin Islands," said Senate President Usie R. Richards, who sponsored the measure in the 26th Legislature. A dedication ceremony was held at the site Monday, according to a V.I. Legislature news release.
Family members were present and expressed their appreciation to the senate for the recognition, the release said.
A cariso singer who performed for decades, McIntosh traveled to Washington D.C. with other culture bearers and organizations to participate in the Smithsonian Institute Folk Life Festival, bringing V.I. historical and cultural pride to the audience, Richards said.
"McIntosh was a talented woman with a marvelous sense of humor and a keen sense of culture," Richards said.
