Nov. 15, 2007 — The newly established Virgin Islands YWCA is being recognized by the territory as Gov. John deJongh Jr. has proclaimed this "YMCA and YWCA Week."
The recognition is part of the national organization's Week of Prayer and World Fellowship.
The theme for this year's observance is "Children First," said Donnalie Edwards-Cabey, president of the local organization. Edwards-Cabey started the branch earlier this year, with a breakfast at Emancipation Garden. (See "Not for Profit: YWCA of the Virgin Islands.")
The governor praised the dual organizations, saying, "[They] enrich our communities and the lives of individuals and families through educational programs… [T]he organizations continue to impact the world through cross-cultural programs which have provided guidance and support for families and communities."
Edwards-Cabey invites all children's groups and organizations, as well as the general public to a Children Youth Prayer & Praise rally from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Emancipation Garden.
