Weekend Violence Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

Aug. 19, 2007 — One man was killed and several were injured in a weekend of violence on St. Croix.
Abijah Todman, 26, died at the Gov. Juan Luis Hospital sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, from multiple gunshot wounds, according to St. Croix Police Chief Thomas Hannah. Hannah said Todman was shot during an altercation in the road in front of the Gas-for-Less station at Diamond Crest Plaza at 10:46 p.m. Saturday.
On Monday, Police spokeswoman Monyka Johnigan said the victim was traveling in a car with friends when he was shot. The driver noticed he was being followed by a gold Honda, Johnigan said, just before the shots were fired in the roadway in front of the gas station. It was the driver who took Todman to the hospital, Johnigan said.
The police chief said he was on his way to the hospital to check on a woman stabbed in the chest by her common-law husband when he got the call about the shooting.
Police are looking for 37-year-old Kerwan Thomas Richardson a/k/a Corren Huchinson in the domestic violence incident, which Hannah said took place at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Hutchinson was described as a 5-foot 6-inch, short-haired black male with a beard and mustache. The victim was in stable condition at Juan Luis Hospital.
On Friday, a 57-year-old woman was accosted at 2 p.m. in La Grange and robbed of $25. Hannah said the woman was beaten in the face and body by the suspect, a black male wearing navy blue short pants with a University of North Carolina insignia on the pants. He was wearing a white T-shirt and had a tattoo on his neck.
At 5:40 p.m. Saturday, police received a call from a mother in Estate Williams Delight, who reported her 13-year-old son had thrown hot water on his 6-year-old brother. Hannah said the 13-year-old was turned over to Youth Investigations Unit of the V.I. Police Department, but Hannah said he was sure the teenager had since been returned to his parents' custody. Hannah said the 6-year-old had sustained discoloration to his skin and minor burns to his chest and neck.
Wrapping up a stormy weekend as Hurricane Dean passed south of St. Croix, police were called at 4:30 a.m. Sunday to the Plaza Café at United Shopping Plaza. A fight at the café had left a cook at the establishment with lacerations to his head, face and side, according to Hannah, who said he wasn't sure what kind of weapon was used.
"It could have been a machete," he said.
The fight between the cook and two other people occurred when patrons were told not to sit on the pool table.
"I don't know why people didn't just stay home this weekend with all this wind and rain," Hannah said.
Police are searching for the gold colored Honda involved in the fatal shooting and are asking anyone who may have information on this incident to come forward and contact police at 712-6076 (Investigations Bureau) or dial 911.
