Special Education to Provide Training for Impartial Hearing Officers and Mediators

Aug. 17, 2007 – The Office of Special Education is seeking individuals interested in becoming trained as impartial hearing officers and impartial mediators, according to a press release from State Director of Special Education Carrie S. Johns.
"The primary function of impartial hearing officers and impartial mediators is to hear due process complaints and resolve disputes on matters relating to the identification, evaluation or educational placement of a child with a disability, or the provision of a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to the child. Individuals will be trained in the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004," said Johns.
Candidates interested in serving as impartial hearing officers or impartial mediators must not be an employee of the State Educational Agency (SEA) or the Local Educational Agency (LEA) that is involved in the education or care of the child; or a person having a personal or professional interest that conflicts with the person's objectivity in the hearing.
For more information or to register for the training, contact Dolores Clendinen at 774-4399, ext. 2248.
