Snow Family Dominates Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep West is Best Triathlon

April 5, 2007 — The husband-and-wife duo of Jason and Heidi Snow outdueled spouses Bob Halk and Elizabeth Armstrong to capture the men's and women’s categories in the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep West is Best Triathlon on Sunday.
The 19th edition of the Frederiksted-based race featured a new flat-and-fast course and the largest turnout of local athletes in its history. The 880-yard swim took place at Coconuts on the Beach in relatively calm waters. Brent Mays led Halk out of the water, with Snow over two minutes back. However, by the end of the 11.5 bike leg, the two leaders were neck and neck. They remained together for the entire 3 mile run, until Snow outkicked Halk to win by two seconds in 1:08:59.
As was the case in their husband’s race, Armstrong had a large lead over Snow out of the water and even increased it on the bike. However, the gap closed substantially by the halfway point in the run, and at the end, Snow sprinted by for a slim three-second win in 1:22:28.
In the youth race, Samantha Smith led the whole race to capture her second win in a row.
She completed the 440-yard swim, seven-mile bike and 1.5-mile run in 47:03. Sofia Holloway was second in 58:42.
Relay team members Shogren/Lunceford/Solorzano won by fewer than 30 seconds over Rahr/Massiah/Chichester in 1:08:28.
