March 29, 2007 – Senate President Usie R. Richards today called on government officials and the general public to participate in honoring the legacy of the late Governor Cyril Emanuel King by not only remembering his contributions to the Territory, but by enforcing the provisions of the law which designates King's April 7th birth date every year as a "Day of Special Recognition in the Virgin Islands."
"When Act #5147 was approved, it mandated that April 7th of each year be observed as 'Cyril Emanuel King Day' in the Virgin Islands, and called for appropriate ceremonies that include programs, assemblies and/or guest speakers honoring Governor King to be held in all public schools," said Senator Richards.
Richards also indicated that the statute required the Education Commissioner to reproduce and disseminate photographs and biographical information about Governor King to all private, public and parochial schools.
"I am hopeful that when Governor King's birthday is observed on April 7th, we as a community truly honor one of our most charismatic and competent chief executives by informing and educating our population, especially the young people, on his dedication, commitment and sacrifice in improving the dignity and standard of living for the people of the Virgin Islands," concluded Senate President Usie R. Richards.
