March 6, 2007 – Today, March 1, Senator Shawn-Michael Malone expressed excitement for the beginning of the second Virgin Islands History month, March, in our territory.
“In 2005, I sponsored Bill No. 26-0155, to designate March as Virgin Islands History month. With the support of my colleagues and Gov. Turnbull, it became Act 6802. As March begins, I want to urge the entire community to embrace VI History month and all the significant contributions Virgin Islanders have made to the world,” Senator Malone said. “Many people know I am a strong advocate for promoting Virgin Islands culture and history. Coupled with Act 6642, establishing Quelbe as our official music, and Act 6718, making Quadrille our official dance, I believe we are making significant strides to have our rich and colorful culture embraced by our residents. The Legislature must set the trend for such movements and these laws definitely do so,” Malone explained.
“Parents, educators and culture bearers should take this opportunity to teach our younger generation about the accomplishments and achievements made by Virgin Islanders such as Rothschild Francis, J. Antonio Jarvis, Lionel Roberts, Ulla Muller and Lucinda Millin. If our children aren’t familiar with our past, how can they truly realize their potential and know where to go? This is a path we must all traverse,” Malone remarked.
“Finally, I want to thank the many Virgin Islands’ trailblazers who have set the path for us all. I especially want to thank the legislators and educators, for whom I am very grateful. Without your contributions, I would not be here today. I urge our children to look to these people as noteworthy role models,” Malone concluded.
