Suspect Sought in Shooting Death at Aureo Diaz Heights

Oct. 22, 2006 — St. Croix police say a 20-year-old man died Saturday evening in a shooting at the Aureo Diaz Heights Housing Community, and they are looking for a suspect.
The suspect is Randy Burke, also known as Asha, a 27-year-old male resident of St. Croix, said Lt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesperson. Police seek Burke in connection with the homicide of Julius Cupid.
According to information provided by witnesses, Hannah said, Burke stands approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs approximately 150 pounds, and has brown eyes and black hair styled in locks. Burke was last seen fleeing the Aureo Diaz area in a vehicle. Police consider him armed and dangerous and known to frequent the Aureo Diaz and Mutual Homes Housing communities.
Preliminary police reports indicate that at approximately 6:20 p.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to a shooting incident in the vicinity of Building 15 at Aureo Diaz. Police discovered Cupid lying across the railing of a second-floor apartment, apparently bleeding from the lower portion of his face and unresponsive. The victim suffered what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the lower face. An ambulance took him to the Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he died from his injuries at approximately 7:20 p.m.
Police are investigating reports that the victim got into a verbal argument with a family member that became physical and led to the shooting, Hannah said.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect should contact the St. Croix Criminal Investigation Bureau at 778-2211, extension 6031, 6039 or 6082, Hannah said. Anyone with information about this incident or other crimes may also contact the Investigations Bureaus Crime Hotline at 778-4950, or 911. All information provided to the police will remain confidential.
