Brief: Budget to Be Released Tuesday

May 30, 2006 – Gov. Charles Turnbull is expected to submit his administration's final spending plan for the government in the form of a fiscal year 2007 budget Tuesday. The Revised Organic Act of 1954 requires the chief executive to submit a balanced budget to the Senate by May 30. Turnbull's chief spokesman, James O'Bryan, said Monday Turnbull will comply with the provisions of the law. "The governor intends to meet the established deadline."
O'Bryan added that the budget for the new fiscal year, which opens Oct. 1, will center on the governor's previously identified spending priorities: health, education, public safety, human services and the economy. The proposed spending plan is estimated at somewhere around $740 million, about $16 million more than the fiscal year 2006 executive budget.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Louis Hill has set a schedule for budget hearings beginning June 26 and concluding Aug. 18.
The hearings will open with an overview of the governor's proposal by members of the administration's fiscal team.
