July 9, 2005 – Police are investigating the shooting death of an Estate Two Williams man, whose body was found Friday afternoon in Catherine's Rest.
Dion Williams, who police said was in his mid- to late 30s, apparently died of multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
The killing is the 11th homicide of the year on St. Croix and the 20th in the territory.
According to Sgt. Thomas Hannah, the Virgin Islands police public relations officer, police responded to calls about 3:50 p.m. Friday from a resident in Catherine's Rest who heard a noise outside his house.
"The person was at home with his wife, and he told her that he heard something like firecrackers outside the residence. When he went outside to ascertain what the noise was, he found a body outside the residence," Hannah said.
Williams was "not unknown to the police," Hannah said. "He had been involved in incidents before."
Subsequent reports indicate Williams had connections to a crime ring known as "the commission."
Novelle Francis, territorial chief of police, said that witnesses saw Williams prior to the incident sitting under a tree outside the residence with another individual. The two were approached by two men, both in dark clothing, one with a long gun in his hand.
When Williams tried to flee the scene, he was met with a "hail of gunfire," Francis said. It was possible that Williams was visiting an individual at the Catherine's Rest residence, Francis added.
The suspects in the homicide are two black males, Hannah said. The police are continuing their investigation of the incident.
