Community Alert: Sewage Overflow In Golden Rock

June 8, 2005 – An overflowing manhole reportedly is discharging raw sewage in Estate Golden Rock on St. Croix.
According to a release from Dean C. Plaskett, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources the Division of Environmental Protection has been investigating it.
The Estate Golden Rock manhole is located in the middle of a dirt road east of the Breezes Restaurant. The overflowing manhole has caused raw sewage to pool in and on both shoulders of the dirt road. Due to the overflowing manhole's proximity to shoreline, raw sewage as entered the near shore area on Princess Beach.
The Waste Management Authority is aware of the situation and has indicated that structural damage to the sewage line may have caused the manhole to overflow. The Authority is working to alleviate the problem.
DPNR is advising the public to avoid the area around the overflowing manhole, especially children and adults with compromised immune systems. Standing or running water in this area may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted area. For information regarding water quality call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082. For information regarding sewage overflows call Department of Public Works at 773-1290.
