Rain Puts Damper on Police Week Ball Game

May 16, 2005 – The recent hard rains have forced a slight change in Police Week activities.
A Fun Night at Emile Griffith Ballpark, which would have taken place Tuesday evening, has been canceled.
"The field usually takes a couple of days to dry, so more than likely we won't be able to play ball," Officer Michelle Potter, chairperson of the Police Week Committee, said Monday.
Potter said the V.I. Police Department has been getting support from members of the communities for the its events, which began Sunday with a church service honoring officers who have died. She said various businesses and public sector agencies, including the V.I. Legislature, have made donations for the events. Potter has been on the Police Week Committee since 1997.
The VIPD's Police Week coincides with the national event each year in the week containing May 15. It is geared to recognizing the contributions of police officers to society, and provides the public the opportunity of getting to know the officers in their community.
On Monday, police stations on St. Thomas hosted an open house and gave interested residents tours of their facilities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On St. Croix, school students visited the Patrick Sweeney Headquarters from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The other activities planned for this week will remain as scheduled, with the exception of the Fun Night. (See "Police Week Being Celebrated on the Islands").
"We would like to encourage the public to participate in all the activities," Potter said, adding especially the Civilian Day on Wednesday and the Karaoke Night at Pilgrim's Terrace Thursday evening. She said the Karaoke Night is free to the public.
Potter said, "Just come in and have a good time."
