Department of Education on Target With Textbook Adoptions

Feb. 17, 2005 — Education Commissioner Dr. Noreen Michael says that the department is on target with efforts toward the adoption and purchase of textbooks for the territory’s public school students.
"We are in need of complete adoptions for all subject areas," said Michael. "However, we have decided to begin with the more critical subject areas of reading and mathematics. A revision of content standards in reading and mathematics was recently completed in December 2004. These new standards will serve as the basis for textbook adoptions and subsequent purchases."
To help with the endeavor, the Department of Education arranged for several companies to review the needs and the available texts. The visits have been scheduled for later this month and throughout the month of March. The companies include McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, Harcourt Publishers, Pearson Education, Key Curriculum-Press.
Michael said that following the adoption and purchase of the reading and mathematics texts, textbook adoption will continue in the areas of science and English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Health & Physical Education and Fine Arts.
"The Department is grateful for the efforts made to assist us with this undertaking by the West Indian Company, Ltd., and the Public Finance Authority," Michael said. "We are on track with the steps necessary to utilize the funds earmarked for the textbooks, and pledge that the students of this territory will receive the tools they require toward a quality education."
