Shakima Stoutt Wins Miss UVI Ambassadorial Title
Congratulations to Shakima Stoutt, a junior enrolled in UVI's Pre-Medical Technology Program, who won the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Title on Saturday, Nov. 6, in a pageant at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Khalilah Gordon was first runner-up and Tamica Lawrence was second runner-up. Contestants were judged in introduction, business wear, ambassadorial presentation, talent, evening wear, and question-and-answer categories.
Continuing Student Advisement and Spring Semester Registration Under Way
The 2005 Spring semester registration for returning students on the St. Croix campus continues through Nov. 12. For more information call the Academic Services office on St. Croix at 692-4158.
The 2005 Spring semester registration for returning students on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled through Nov. 10 for undergraduate students and Nov. 12 and 15 for part-time and graduate students. For more information call the Admissions office at 693-1150.
UVI's Spring Semester to begin Jan. 13, 2005
The University of the Virgin Islands Spring semester begins on Jan. 13, 2005, and ends on May 8, 2005. Spring class schedules are available on the UVI web site's – www.uvi.edu – Academics page. Following advisement, students are encouraged to register online. Online registration is available from links on the UVI home page.
Dominica and St. Lucia Students Association to Host Food Sale Nov. 9
UVI's Dominica and St.Lucia Student Association will host a food sale fund raiser on Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in front of the Classroom Administration (CA) building on the St. Thomas campus. Food cost will range from $4 to $6.
SBDC Sets 'Choosing a Business' Seminar on St. Thomas on Nov. 9
The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Choosing a Business" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Small Business Development Center Training Facility on St. Thomas. The seminar, the first in a series of seven titled "Checklist for Starting a Business," is designed for business owners, students and employees. Admission is $20 for each seminar. Those who pre-register will receive a 25 percent discount on each seminar. UVI and high school students (with I.D.) and UVI employees are admitted free, however, they must pre-register. To pre-register or for more information call 776-3206 from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Presentation, Dinner Dance Set to Celebrate Dominican Independence, Culture
In celebration of Dominica's independence and culture, the UVI St. Lucia and Dominica Student Association will host a cultural presentation at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The evening's featured speaker will be noted Dominican anthropologist, educator and historian Dr. Lennox Edward Honychurch. Dr. Honychurch's research is centered on the Carib/Kalina people of the Lesser Antilles and new arrivals from Europe and Africa. His books include: "The Caribbean People," "The Dominica Story – A History of the Island," "Caribbean Landmarks," and "The Cabrits and Prince Rupert Bay." A reception featuring traditional dancing, Creole music and foods from Dominica will follow. The public is invited. There is no charge. The celebration will continue at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, with a dinner dance honoring Dr.Honychurch in the Dining Pavilion. Admission is $15. For more information call 693-1111.
UVI to Close Thursday, Nov. 11, in Observance of Veterans Day
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Classes will resume and all UVI administrative and business offices will return to their regular schedules on Friday, Nov. 12.
Isaac Hayes to Perform at Reichhold Center on Nov. 13
Grammy award winning R&B artist Isaac Hayes will perform at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on Saturday, Nov. 13. Hayes is considered one of the most iconic figures in African-American music, with more than three decades of hits such as "I Stand Accused," "Walk On By," "Chocolate Chip," "It's Heaven to Me," and the theme song from the movie "Shaft." Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, the UVI Bookstore and Krystal & Gifts Galore on St. Thomas and at Connections on St. John. UVI Paradise Jam Games Set for Nov. 19 – 27; Tickets On Sale
Tickets are on sale now for the fifth annual UVI Paradise Jam NCAA Division I basketball tournament. Games in the men's division will run from Nov. 19 to 21, with championship round action on Nov. 22. Women's division games are scheduled for Nov. 25 through 27. The tournament will feature 14 teams and, for the first time, national live television coverage of the championship games. Tickets cost $10 for VI residents (with an ID), $40 for non-VI residents, and $5 for students ages 5 to 17. UVI students can purchase $5 tickets at the UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus. A student ID will be required to qualify for the $5 price. Tickets are also on sale at Modern Music (Havensight) Parrot Fish (Back Street) The Rack (Tutu Park) and Nisky Pharmacy. TV's 'Boston Legal' Producer to Present Free Lecture at Reichhold
The Forum in conjunction with the University of the Virgin Islands Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a free lecture-demonstration by Robert Breech, senior vice president of David E. Kelley Productions Inc., at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the Reichhold Center. David E. Kelley Productions Inc. is the producer of several drama series including "The Practice," "Ally McBeal," "Picket Fences" and "Chicago Hope." Breech served eight seasons as executive producer of "The Practice" and is now a consulting producer on ABC's "Boston Legal." A full news release is available on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.

EPSCoR Science Lecture on Identifying Coral Species Set Nov. 12
A lecture on identifying coral species in Caribbean reefs by Dr. Sandra Romano, UVI assistant professor of Marine Biology, will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to the Theatre (Evans Center room 401) on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Romano points out the economic and ecological importance of coral reefs to the Virgin Islands. The lecture will be hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EP

Early Childhood Literature, Literacy and Languages Conference Set
The third annual V.I. Early Childhood Literature, Literacy and Languages Conference will be held Nov. 13 and 14 on the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. Day one of the conference will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Chase Auditorium (Business Building Room 110). UVI Concert Choir Recital Scheduled Nov. 14 in Charlotte Amalie
The University of the Virgin Islands Concert Choir will hold a recital featuring music students, faculty and friends at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charlotte Amalie. The UVI Community and the general public are invited. Tickets – $10 for adults and $5 for students and children under 12 – are available at the UVI Bookstore, by calling 776-1315, or at the door.
UVI's Little Theatre to Present 'The Mousetrap' Nov. 19-22
The UVI Little Theatre will present Agatha Christie's long running mystery play "The Mousetrap" from Nov. 19 through 22, in the Little Theatre, located on the second floor of the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. IASTED Conference Series Set Nov. 22-24 at Frenchman's Reef
The International Association of Science and Technology for Development (IASTED) will conduct a conference series focusing on computer science, information technology, and environmental modeling and simulation at Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott and Beach Resort from Nov. 22 through 24. UVI's Music Program Christmas Concert Slated for Dec. 4 at the Reichhold
A Christmas Concert will be presented by the Music Program at the University of the Virgin Islands at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Sponsored by UVI's St. Thomas campus Humanities Division, the program will include performances by the UVI Concert Band, directed by Austin A. Venzen, the UVI Concert Choir, directed by Kirsten Kienberger, the UVI Jazz Ensemble, directed by Martin J. Lamkin, and the UVI Steel Pan Ensemble, directed by Shenella Werner. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Ticket outlets include the Reichhold Box Office, the UVI Bookstore, the UVI Humanities Division and Dockside Bookshop in Havensight Mall.
