Sept. 30, 2004 – Saturday is Pennies from Heaven Day at Sunny Isles, a fund-raising event sponsored by Court Appointed Special Advocates, a chance for people to bring their pennies out and have a fun day.
Founded in 1994, CASA of the Virgin Islands is a private, not-for-profit organization established to help ensure that no abused or neglected children needing care slip through cracks in the social service and justice systems.
Saturday's events include storytelling from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., the Grupo Alegre dancers from Pearl B. Larsen Elementary at 2:30 p.m., and the dancers from the St. Croix Educational Complex from 3 to 4 p.m. leading the kids in games. There will also be penny balloons, penny candy, face painting, a clown and a deejay.
"We're hoping people will come out like they did last year and join us…and bring their change jars or empty their pockets," CASA of the Virgin Islands executive director Gail Shearer said.
"We have collection jars all over the island,.including many of the merchants at Sunny Isles. We've collected about $5,000 of the $20,000 [we hope to raise] so far. We're excited that some of the schools are getting involved and are available to any school that would like us to come out and talk about what we're doing and about community service," Shearer said.
