11 Nominated to Commission on Status of Women

Aug. 27, 2004 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has submitted to the Legislature the nominations of 11 persons to serve on the V.I. Commission on the Status of Women.
According to a Government House release issued on Thursday, the commission is responsible for "fact-finding investigations and reports on the status of women in the Virgin Islands in areas such as health, education, housing, civil rights, earnings, employment, family relations, working conditions, political status and legal status."
The commission has the authority to conduct hearings, appoint advisory committees and gather and analyze data relative to the status of women in the territory, the release stated.
The governor has nominated five persons from St. Thomas, five from St. Croix and one from St. John.
Nominated from St. Thomas are:
– Rev. Toi A. Barbel-Smith of One Voice Ministries and the International Gospel Center of St. Thomas.
– Sandra F. Brunet, chief policy adviser to the lieutenant governor.
– Pamela A. Eckstein, director of the Primary Health Care Office in the Office of the Governor.
– Canchan Hemrajani, owner of the Artland jewelry business.
– Shirley M. Sadler, Fraud Task Force investigative support specialist in the Inspector General's Office.
Nominated from St. Croix are:
– Ruth Harrigan Beagles, retired University of the Virgin Islands associate professor of education.
– Sonia L. Boyce, assistant press secretary in the Office of the Governor, who will chair the commission.
– Barbara Lee-Jackson, executive director of the Health Department's V.I. Perinatal Partnership.
– Nereida Rivera, Hovensa safety paralegal.
– Adrienne L. Williams, coordinator of the Housing Authority's Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
Nominated from St. John is:
– Kathlyn P. Worrell, paralegal specialist with the Environmental Protection Division of the Planning and Natural Resources Department.
