Estate Rattan Road Now Part of V.I. System

Aug. 3, 2004 – Sen. Almando "Rocky" Liburd in a release issued on Tuesday said he was pleased that his proposal to make a "dilapidated, hazardous dirt road" in Estate Rattan a part of the territory's public road system received Gov. Charles W. Turnbull's support.
Turnbull on Friday signed into law a bill appropriating $1 million to the Education Department for textbooks and other instructional materials. Among its assorted amendments was a section authorizing the governor to accept the stretch of road into the public road system.
With the governor's action, Liburd said he had "moved one step closer toward bringing relief to more than 30 residents of Estate Rattan."
He said that many of the residents "have had to park their cars [and] walk up and down several steep, hazardous inclines just to get to the doors of their homes." The road, he said, "has been in a poor, eroded condition for more than 25 years."
Liburd said he and his staff are "working with the Office of Management [and Budget] to identify funds to have the road paving completed." He called on Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood to place the matter on his "expedited road projects list."
