Delegate Wants Local Feedback on 9/11 Report

Aug. 3, 2004 – Delegate Donna M. Christensen will host town hall meetings on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix to gather feedback on "The 9/11 Commission Report," which was recently released.
Christensen is a member of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security. Following the V.I. gatherings, according to a release issued by her office on Tuesday, she will return to Washington, D.C., to take part in congressional meetings during the August recess on Capitol Hill to address concerns raised in the report.
"With new threats and the recent release of the report, there is an urgency in the Congress to implement its recommendations as soon as possible," Christensen said. "I want to hear what Virgin Islanders think of the report and other areas of concern before I participate in meetings being held by the Democratic Caucus and the Homeland Security Committee."
The committee is scheduled to meet on Aug. 16, when it is to hear testimony from Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge and FBI director Robert Mueller.
Following is the schedule of Christensen's town hall meetings in the territory:
St. Thomas — 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel.
St. John – 6 p.m. Friday at the Legislature Building in Cruz Bay.
St. Croix – 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at St. Gerard’s Hall in Frederiksted.
"The 9/11 Commission Report" is "a sobering account of the failure of government to close the security gaps, including those in the Virgin Islands, which make the country vulnerable to another terrorist attack," the release from Christensen's office stated.
Copies of a summary of the 600-plus page report are available at Christensen's offices on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John and in Washington. The report in its entirety can be accessed online at the 9/11 Commission Web site. The report also is available in paperback format at most bookstores.
