Five Graduates off to College with AFT Award in Hand

June 17, 2004 – The St. Croix Federation of Teachers has announced the five recipients of their scholarship awards for 2004. The graduated seniors are:
— LaShaunee C.M. Beatty, graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex, headed for the University of Pittsburgh to major in socio-anthropology and socio-Egyptology;
— Rebekah P. Evans, graduate of St. Croix Country Day School, who will attend Stanford University to major in communications;
— Kaliema Jean-Marie, graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex, who is bound for the University of the Virgin Islands with plans to major in computer engineering;
— Akeel Riviere, graduate of St. Croix Central High School, who is off to Florida Metropolitan University to study business administration; and
— Melanie Ruiz, graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex, who will major in neonatal nursing at the University of the Virgin Islands.
St. Croix Federation of Teachers, Local 1826 of the American Federation of Teachers, awarded five $1,000 one-time scholarships in 2004. Three are awarded to 2004 high school graduates planning to enroll in a teacher education program, and two go to 2004 high school graduates planning to attend post-secondary school with any proposed major. Requirements include: submission of a transcript for the preceding seven semesters; a letter of recommendation; a letter from applicant giving biographical data and present educational aspirations; letter of acceptance to a post secondary school; minimum 3.0 overall grade point average; submission of a questionnaire; evidence of at least 50 hours of community service; must be a dependent of an AFT member.
