Feb. 26, 2004 Join the Environmental Association of St. Thomas/St. John this Saturday or Sunday, or March 13 or 14 for one of their annual Whale Watches.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to view one of the largest mammals, the humpback whale, and to learn about the ecology of various cays," EAST president Carla Joseph said.
She said that tickets are available for all trips.
Trips run $55. EAST members get $10 off the price. The event is an EAST fund-raiser.
The trips leave the V.I. National Park dock in Red Hook, St. Thomas at 9 a.m. Joseph suggested that everyone arrive by 8:30 a.m. to ensure a smooth departure. The boat returns by 4 p.m.
This year's trip is on The Allura, a spacious catamaran that provides a stable trip for whale watchers. Plans are to sail north past Lovango and through the channel by Jost Van Dyke. There are no guarantees that you'll see whales, however.
"Everything is by chance. This is the wild. Nothing we're going to be looking at is orchestrated," Joseph said.
Eco-guides accompany each trip. Plans are not firm, but either Craig Barshinger or Laurel Brannick-Trager will be aboard. Barshinger was formerly a fisheries biologist at the Fish and Wildlife Division of the Planning and Natural Resources Department. Brannick-Trager is an interpretive ranger and bird expert at the national park in St. John. Both will provide information about the whales and other species encountered on the trip.
While drinks are for sale on all trips, participants need to bring lunch, snacks, sun screen, and a hat.
Tickets are available at Dockside Books in Havensight Mall, East End Secretarial in Red Hook shopping center, and at Connections in St. John.
