DISTRICT HOSPITAL BOARD ELECTS NEW OFFICERS

Feb. 27, 2004 – The St. Thomas-St. John Governing Board of the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital and Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center has elected new officers.
Unanimously elected at the recent meeting: chair, June A. Adams; vice chair, Samuel Topp; secretary, Francis E. Jackson; and treasurer, Natalie A. Thomas.
The board thanked Beverly Chongasing for her "exemplary service leading the District Governing Board" as past chairperson, and commended her for her role in leading the Schneider Hospital during its search for two chief executive officers, the most recent being Rodney E. Miller Sr. Chongasing served as board chair during the hospital's successful effort to achieve semiautonomy as well as certification with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In December, the hospital received its first-ever accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the nation's leading health-care accreditation organization.
"Ms. Chongasing was an instrumental part in leading the hospital through some very challenging times," Miller said.
New board chair Adams concurred. "She has really brought the organization to where it is today, but there still is a lot of work to be done, and with God's help, I will do all that I can to meet the goals that our strategic plan has laid out," Adams said. (For an example of Adams' achievements, see the Source Feb. 26 front-page story on the Schneider Hospital's ongoing Licensed Practical Nursing program.)
Other members of the District Governing Board include pastor Ray Joseph, Horace T. Brooks, nurse Yvonne Francis, and Dr. Leighmin J. Lu.
