Feb. 21, 2004 – The St. Croix Orchid Society is presenting "Rhapsody of Orchids," the 33rd orchid show it has offered to the St. Croix community on Friday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, Feb. 29.
The society was started more than 30 years ago, with the goal of educating the community about orchids and how to care for them. The show, presented in February except for an interruption caused by Hurricane Hugo, is sanctioned by the American Orchid Association.
Displays range from table top to 12-square-foot up to 25-square-foot areas, and they are set up by junior and senior members and growers by Thursday night. From 9 a.m. Friday, AOS judges will visit each display and judge registered plants and displays according to categories established by AOR. Winning plants and exhibits will receive ribbons and trophies. About noon, after the judging is completed, judges and members will repair to the Cormorant Hotel for lunch.
The show will open to the public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The show continues Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show is held at the American Legion Hall in Christiansted.
In addition to the display of orchids, the Bonsai Society will display their bonsais. The vendors, who are also judges, will have blooming orchids and non-blooming orchids for sale. The original painting of the show poster will be raffled, as well as other-orchid related accessories.
Approximately 500 people usually attend the show. The society hopes the show will attract new members to the Orchid Society, which meets monthly. A $3 donation is requested at the door.
