Senator Celestino A. White Sr. has written to Postmaster Louis Jackson, urging the Virgin Islands Postal Service do more to make mail receptacles available to residents living in remote parts of the islands.
Senator White pointed out that the population shift to rural areas mandate that more must be done to initiate postal service to these locations. He said that residents living in rural areas of the Territory often do not enjoy the benefit of accessible mail service. Residents have been heard to complain that they have a difficult time trying to get to the post office to retrieve their mail, due largely to traffic congestion or lack of parking space.
"As you are well aware, many residents now prefer to live in the countryside. Additionally, many new housing constructions such as Fortuna 3A-C, Lovenlund, Mariendahl and other outlying areas in St. Thomas, are in development phase or have come to fruition," Senator White said in his correspondence to Postmaster Jackson. The senator noted, however, that he is happy to see that a considerable number of mail receptacles were recently installed at the multi-purpose site in Estate Bordeaux, St. Thomas.
In order to be more informed, Senator White asked Postmaster Jackson to provide him with information on future plans to install mail receptacles at rural locations throughout the Territory. In conclusion, Senator White offered his support to the Virgin Islands Postal Service and its endeavor to provide better mail service to residents.
