APHRODITE SHOW OPENS AT GALLERY ST. THOMAS

Dec. 10, 2003 — Gallery St. Thomas and owner Claire Ochoa welcome the holiday season with new works from artist Aphrodite, just in time for Miracle on Main Street.
Highlights of the show are two large oil paintings depicting idyllic Caribbean vistas. Painted in Aphrodite's romantic style, the pieces invite viewers to step through the canvas to experience the view on the horizon.
Also featured are familiar Virgin Islands landscapes and delightful floral vignettes. For a sampling of her landscapes, visit Claire Ochoa's Gallery St. John Web site. Here you can see Hans Lollik, Sapphire, Caneel Bay ruins and the Whim Greathouse, through the "eyes" of Aphrodite's paintbrush.
When she lived in Boston, Mass., she studied portraiture for three years. In the 1990s she painted sports figures: Kirby Puckett, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Five of her sports portraits are displayed at the New England Sports Museum in Boston, according to her Web site.
She visited the Caribbean in 1996 and was inspired to move to St. Thomas to pursue her art career full-time. She has a studio/gallery in Tillett Gardens.
Ochoa's gallery is taking part in the festivities of Miracle on Main Street by extending hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aphrodite will be on hand to greet guests from 4 to 7 p.m. The gallery is located about a block off Main Street up Garden Street, and then up the stairs on the second story of the white building with the bright blue shutters.
