Dec. 5, 2003 – For anyone in the Virgin Islands with dreams of making it to Hollywood, this could be your chance: The pilot for a new ABC-TV series slated for shooting on St. Thomas later this month will be holding two open casting calls in the territory in the coming days in order to find about 50 extras.
The first will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday on St. John at The Beach Bar at Wharfside Village in Cruz Bay.
The second will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday on St. Thomas at Tickles Dockside Pub in Crown Bay Marina.
The show producers are searching for slim, attractive men and women ages 18-40 who have an "exotic look." All ethnicities are encouraged to come out.
Those doing so will need to know their body measurements and should wear swimsuits under their clothes. The roughly 50 extras chosen for the show can expect to earn as much as $250 a day.
"It's not going to be a success if I don't have beautiful people who will help show off the island," says Deborah Quade, a supervisor at Imagemaker Production Services. It's Quade's job to make certain that Beacon Pictures, the studio making the pilot, has all it needs to make the project go smoothly — whether that means finding extras or hiring a catering service.
Quade said she's not at liberty to reveal the title of the show, which is being produced for Warner Bros., but she said it's a melodrama revolving around the employees and guests at a luxury hotel in the tropics. Despite reports that the pilot would not be shot in the Virgin Islands, she said shooting will begin Dec. 17 and 18 on St. Thomas.
While the producers locally are looking only for extras for background shots, Quade said the show could provide that lucky break for someone with dreams of stardom. As she put it, "You never know in this business."
