Nov. 20, 2003 – The Education Department has named Regenia Williams the 2004 Teacher of the Year for the St. Thomas-St. John district.

A release from the department stated that other teachers nominated for the honor were Cecelia Walters Smith, Charlotte Amalie High School; Erma Skelton, CAHS; Anita de la Cruz, Edith Williams Elementary School; and Ava Braithwaite, Peace Corps Elementary School.
A teacher of the year also will be chosen for the St. Croix district, and then the two will vie for the title of "state" teacher of the year. The winner will represent the territory at the national teacher of the year competition in Dallas, Texas.
In order to be considered as a candidate for teacher of the year, the release stated, a teacher must have "outstanding" evaluation ratings and an excellent attendance record for two years; must have a professional and personal commitment to the teaching profession; and must have made a significant contribution to student development and performance.
