PARADISE JAM BASKETBALL TOURNEY IS NOV. 21-29

Nov. 19, 2003 – Over the next nine days, the Virgin Islands for the fourth straight year will be a focus of sports interest across the nation as the University of the Virgin Islands hosts the 2003 NCAA Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament.
Play begins Friday night at the UVI Sports and Fitness center on the St. Thomas campus and continues through Nov. 29.
Competing in Division I men's play are Appalachian State University, Boston College, Hampton University, LaSalle University, Monmouth University and Wichita State University.
Signed on for Division I women's competition are Georgia Tech, Indiana University, Iowa State University, James Madison University, Mississippi State University, Southwest Missouri State University, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University.
The games are open to the public. Daily general admission tickets are $10 for V.I. residents ($5 for UVI students).
Thanks to the efforts of UVI athletic director Peter Sauer, the university has contracted to continue hosting the annual Thanksgiving-time NCAA Division I tournaments for the next five years, according to the UVI Web site.
In last year's UVI Paradise Jam, the men's division saw the Brigham Young Cougars finish first in a field that also included St. Bonaventure University, Kansas State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Toledo, and Virginia Tech.
In the women's division, the nation's top-ranked Duke University Blue Devils took the crown in competition with Boston College, Hampton University, Old Dominion University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Oregon and the University of South Carolina.
