A judge who has to be reappointed is in the same situation as one who has to be re-elected (a practice followed in many states)–he or she will be evaluated on the popularity of their decisions rather than on the merits of their performance. The judicial branch should not be subjected to such scrutiny. The time to change the current practice is now. Judge Moore has made controversial rulings, but so does every Judge. However, his hard work and commitment to the Virgin Islands should be acknowleged and rewarded with respect from every Virgin Islander regardless of what Washington decides, as the politics surrounding his reappointment should not cloud his well documented resume of dedicated service to our community. In the meantime, we should all work to change the current procedure.
