V.I. REPUBLICANS MOURN, REMEMBER GOV. LUIS FERRE

Oct. 24, 2003 — The Republican Party of the Virgin Islands has released the following statement on the passing of former Gov. Luis A. Ferre of Puerto Rico:
We, the Republican Party of the Virgin Islands, are saddened to learn of the passing of the former Gov. Luis A. Ferre of Puerto Rico. Many of us were looking forward to celebrating his 100th birthday with him in February.
Luis Ferre led a full and rich life. He was an icon of the Republican Party and a strong supporter of statehood for Puerto Rico. In 1951, he served as a member of the Puerto Rico Constitutional Convention and was a member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, from 1953-1956. In 1966, he was selected as a member of the United States and Puerto Rico Status Commission. From 1969 through 1972, Luis Ferre was the governor of Puerto Rico. In 1977 through 1980, he was president of the Puerto Rico Senate and a member of the Puerto Rico Senate from 1981 through 1984. Luis was active on the national level and served as a Hispanic personnel adviser to President George H. Bush.
Gov. Ferre was state chairman of the National Party of Puerto Rico from Aug. 21, 1975 until his death. He was a strong supporter of the Virgin Islands and worked closely with us in expanding representation of minorities within the Republican Party.
He was a true statesman and has been recognized for his outstanding contributions as a man and a leader within Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and the Republican Party nationally. All of us, Republicans and others, mourn his loss.
