Oct. 13, 2003 – St. Croix resident Beranardett Jno-Finn has recently been named an "Our Time Has Come" scholar by New York State's Syracuse University, an honor she shares with a select few among the schools students and alumni.
Jno-Finn is in her junior year majoring in biochemistry and, according to a release sent out by the university, was one of 48 undergraduate and graduate students selected to receive the scholarship out of a student body in exess of 18,000 women and men.
According to a S.U. Magazine article published in '98, The "Our Time Has Come" scholarship was introduced in 1987 by the University's Office of Program Development as a way for more African-American and Latino alumni to give back to the university community. And the alumni have responded in kind to the call for their generosity.
Jno-Finn is one of more than 400 scholars who have benefitted from this program, which has drawn in more than $4.3 million in donations and awarded $1.1 million in scholarships.
"Our Time Has Come" takes its name from an impassioned speech delivered by then presidential-candidate Jesse Jackson at the 1984 democratic national convention.
