ETHAN KREUL BLAZES THE 22ND FOUNDERS DAY 5K RUN

Oct. 5, 2003 — Although the field of runners was relatively small, several runners put in stellar performances to make Sunday's running of the 22nd annual Founders Day Run on St. Thomas memorable.
Leading the way was University of the Virgin Islands student Ethan Kreul, who ran one of the fastest five-kilometer races ever on St. Thomas. His time of 16:08.91 is believed to be a course record. Burning the women's course was CAHS student Charley Charles, who posted a time of 22:15, faster by 53 seconds than her win last year.
Following them were other fine racers. CAHS trackster Luis Guillen ran 19:00 for second male overall, while Grace Tuma (23:56) was the second female finisher overall and first in the 30-and-over division. Bill Thompson (19:36) was top finisher for 30-and-over males. With a time of 25:53, Garvey Thomas was the sole male finisher in the men under 18 group.
Other top finishers were Kelly Kierman (24:14) and Simone Francis (24:30) for second and third behind Tuma in the 30-and-over women's race. Crystal Joseph (36:57) and Chadiola Chumney (39:06) trailed Charles. Dave Briggs (22:00) followed Kreul and Guillen to finish third among the 18-29 men. Steve Morton (21:18) and Dale Joseph (22:12) were second and third among 30-and-over men. Complete results follow below.
The first running of this event took place on Oct. 11, 1982 and led to the formation of the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners, STAR.
STAR's next event is the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer two-mile fun run/ walk at Port of Sale Mall at 5 p.m. Oct. 19. Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. One can register in advance at Players, Going Seanile and The Comfort Zone.
