UNITED WAY BREAKFAST TO KICK OFF 2004 DRIVE

Sept. 30, 2003 – On Saturday, United Way of St. Thomas-St. John volunteers and contributors will gather at the Ritz-Carlton Resort on St. Thomas for an appreciation breakfast and the kickoff of the agency's 25th annual campaign.
"This is the most important campaign in the 25-year history of our United Way," 2004 campaign chair Steve Baker said in a release. "Our donors and volunteers realize that in light of the Virgin Islands economy, it is vital that the United Way continues to provide the support needed by our 16 member agencies. This year's campaign goal of $800,000 will allow United Way to do just that."
That goal represents a 23 percent increase from the 2003 target of $650,000, which was met, setting a record for local United Way giving.
According to the release, a new leadership giving program will be unveiled on Saturday, and more than 60 individuals, companies and organizations are expected to announce their pledges to the 2004 campaign.
They will be "setting the pace for others to follow," Cornel Williams, president of the United Way board of directors, said.
At the breakfast, Williams said, a locally produced documentary honoring past volunteers and contributors will be shown, and a founding board member will be a guest speaker. Volunteers and contributors from the 2003 previous campaign also will be recognized.
