May 14, 2003 – Police responding to a call shortly after noon on Wednesday found a man dead of a gunshot wound in a room under construction at a residence in Smith Bay.
Investigating officers and Major Crime Unit detectives found the body of Robert Leander Joseph Sr., 31, lying in a pool of blood with a single bullet wound to the head.
Four squad cars, the forensics van, an ambulance and the medical examiner's car converged on the location Wednesday afternoon, according to a witness.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said an autopsy will be performed to determine whether foul play was involved, but that the preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was a "possible suicide."
Hannah said police found a family photograph, a note and a weapon near the body. He declined to comment on the contents of the note.
