UVI Hosts NASA, V.I. Students at NASA Awareness Days Opening
The University of the Virgin Islands began a celebration of its partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration with the opening ceremonies of NASA Awareness Days at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, a recognition of local science fair winners and UVI science and mathematics students is planned at the Sports and Fitness Center. An evening session is planned at 6 p.m. at UVI's Etleman Observatory.
On Wednesday, Nov. 20, NASA representatives travel to St. Croix for a day on campus.

"The Dancing Mice" Continues Friday in UVI's Little Theatre
The UVI Little Theatre's fall presentation of "The Dancing Mice," a play by Pulitzer Prize winning author John Patrick, continues its two-weekend run Friday, Nov. 22, in the Little Theatre in the CA building on the St. Thomas campus. Performances are also scheduled on Nov. 23-24. Show time is 8 p.m.
The show opened to enthusiastic audiences this past weekend. Tickets are still available, with those for Saturday's performance going particularly quickly. Tickets – $5 for students and $10 for adults – are available at the Humanities Building and UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus, and at Nisky Pharmacy and Dockside Bookstore. Information and Knowledge Sharing Conference Set November 18-20
UVI and the International Association of Science and Technology (IASTED) is hosting a conference on Information and Knowledge Sharing (IKS 2002) on St. Thomas through Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. Sea Grant Opportunities Will Be Focus of NOAA Presentation
UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies will host a presentation highlighting opportunities available through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Sea Grant Program on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Kurt Grove of the NOAA Sea Grant Program at the University of Puerto Rico will make the videoconferenced presentation at 1 p.m. It will be available in Teacher Education room T101 on the St. Thomas campus and Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus.

SBDC Business Plans Seminar Set for Both Islands
UVI's Small Business Development Center is offering a two-part seminar titled "Writing an Effective Business Plan" this week on both St. Croix and St. Thomas. The St. Croix seminars are scheduled as evening events. Those on St. Thomas will be held in the morning.
— The St. Croix seminars are scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 19, and Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the UVI-Small Business Development Center Training Center, Sunshine Mall Lower Level. Admission to each session is $10 pre-registration fee and $20 walk-in fee. For those attending both sessions, the pre-registration fee is $15 and the walk-in fee is $25. Free admission is offered to all veterans of the U.S. armed services, UVI faculty, staff and students. To pre-register for seminars or for more information call 692-5270.
— The St. Thomas seminars are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Nov. 19, and Thursday, Nov. 21, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. Admission is $20. A $5 discount is available to individuals who pre-register by 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, and Wednesday Nov. 20. Veterans of the U.S. armed forces are being admitted free to all SBDC seminars during the month of November. Proof of veteran's status and pre-registration are required. Admission to the seminars is free to UVI faculty, staff and students, although they must pre-register. For details call the SBDC at 776-3206.
Musical Afternoon Offered on St. Thomas Campus November 21
The public is invited to an informal Music Afternoon featuring rehearsal performances by UVI music students. The rehearsal is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, in the choir room of the UVI Music Building on the St. Thomas campus. For more information call Prof. Austin Venzen at 693-1192.
Dookhan Memorial Lecture to Feature Rare V.I. Film
The V.I. public will have a chance to view rare film footage of sugar cane harvesting on St. Croix between 1903 and 1919, when Wayne James, founder of the Homeward Bound Foundation, presents the third Isaac Dookhan Memorial Lecture this week on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.
The lecture — titled "The Reacquisition of Material Culture in the Virgin Islands" — will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, on St. Thomas in room 220 of the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix, the lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in the cafetorium of the UVI Campus Center.
In September of this year James discovered 22 minutes of historic film footage featuring Crucian people harvesting sugar cane by hand. The film was shot between 1903 and 1919. James is making copies of the film available to educational institutions in the Virgin Islands as part of his foundation's ongoing effort to reacquire and disseminate the material culture of the people of the Virgin Islands.
UVI's Social Sciences Division sponsors the Isaac Dookhan Memorial Lecture series. Dr. Dookhan was a professor of history and historian/ writer-in-residence at UVI and was a scholarly and prolific writer of the history of the Virgin Islands, Guyana and the Caribbean. United Way 'Day of Caring' Volunteers Needed
Volunteers from the UVI community are being sought to participate in the fifth annual Day of Caring sponsored by United Way of St. Thomas-St. John. The 2002 Day of Caring is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at St. Thomas' Roy L. Schneider Hospital.
Volunteers will tackle projects such as painting various areas of the hospital, building bench seating for the emergency room, and assorted landscaping. Volunteers will receive a continental breakfast and a light lunch. Each will also receive a painter's cap. Interested persons should contact UVI's United Way Coordinator Desserie Smith at 693-1426 to register or for more information. Volunteers will gather at 8 a.m. at the hospital. More than 230 individuals participated in the 2001 Day of Caring.
