FRENCH NAVY CANCELS PLANS FOR SHIP TO VISIT

Oct. 10, 2002 – The French Navy frigate Ventose, which had been scheduled to pay a call at St. Thomas Friday through Monday, will not be visiting the territory after all. Odile de Lyrot, honorary French consul on St. Thomas, said that "due to major operational reasons," the French Navy headquarters canceled the visit.
A reception that had been scheduled aboard the ship Friday evening also has been canceled, de Lyrot said. However, she said, a visit by the French consul general from Miami is still on, with two meetings set for Thursday evening — at 6 p.m. at La Petite Fenetre in front of the building being renovated as the Frenchtown Museum, and at 7:30 p.m. at The Pointe at Villa Olga restaurant in Frenchtown.
"I cannot tell you how disappointed I am," de Lyrot said. "Nevertheless, things like these happen, and we are looking forward to another occasion to demonstrate the strength of our community."
