April 8, 2002 – Six members of the V. I. National Guard have been selected to support the U.S. President's retreat at Camp David, Maryland, and have been on duty since April 1.
Five of the six are from the 610th Quarter Master Company out of St. Thomas. They are: Sgt. Melvin Abramson, Sgt. 1st Class Charles George, Sgt. Calvin Jackson, Pvt. 1st Class Raquel Penn, and Sgt. 1st Class Frederick Stephen. The sixth is Staff Sgt. Theodore Willock of the 661st Military Police Company out of St. Croix. They will be preparing meals for the camp staff and visitors over a 12-day period through April 12.
Another V.I. National Guardsman, Lt. Col. Timothy Lake, has been on duty as Camp David Commander for close to a year. Through Lake's and V.I. Adjutant General Cleave McBean's persistence, and with the approval of V.I. Governor Charles W. Turnbull, this has come to pass. Both the governor and McBean expect these soldiers to be great ambassadors, and will give the camp "a delicious taste of Virgin Islands cuisine," according to a release.
