CANDIDATES DETAIL STANDS ON V.I. ECONOMY

On the eve of senatorial elections that could well determine the territory's economic future—or lack of same—the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce has released the results of its candidates' questionnaire, asking all those running for a seat to respond in writing on seven issues of critical financial importance.
In a letter to its members released to the media, Chamber President John de Jongh Jr. said, "In the past two years, the Chamber has been extremely active in putting forth ideas and approaches to improve economic conditions of the territory, and the business environment … (The questionnaire) gives you an idea of the views of our next group of Senators from the District of St. Thomas-St. John and the At-Large Senator."
De Jongh said the questions were based on topics, issues and concerns raised by Chamber members over the past two years. While the Chamber does not endorse or recommend candidates, he said, "we can ensure that you have all the information to make an informed decision."
The Chamber's report follows close on the heels of the release of an earlier 27-question document in which candidates were asked to respond in one of five ways: yes, no, no position, conditionally yes, or conditionally no.
Among the issues posed in the yes-or-no questionnaire were privatization of government services, the proposed hike in gross receipts taxes, the Five-Year Operating and Strategic Financial Plan, and Industrial Development Commission benefits. The written-response document asked the 28 would-be senators to list three initiatives to reduce the V.I. government's deficit, three ways to restore private sector jobs and the marine industry, and the economic activities that should receive tax incentives—among other issues.
Three candidates—Wayne Chinnery, Willis Phillips and Celestino White Sr.—did not respond to the Chamber's questions.
Both articles will remain on the Source to provide a guideline by which residents can judge how well winning candidates live up to their promises.
