NO SIGN OF RESORT POUCH SAID TO CONTAIN $50K

Police and bank investigators spent Wednesday searching for a bank night-deposit pouch said to contain an estimated $50,000 that was reported missing by the St. John Westin Resort.
Sgt. Annette Raimer, police information officer, said Investigations Bureau officers are treating the case as a grand larceny. The money was delivered to Chase Manhattan Bank "by a Westin security officer who said she checked and double checked," the sergeant said.
Resort security officials said the deposit was dropped in the night-deposit chute at the bank's Cruz Bay branch at 12:45 a.m. Saturday. But when a resort accountant called branch manager Esperanza Pickering Tuesday, Raimer said, he was told the deposit had not been received.
The missing pouch is said to contain cash, checks, travelers' checks and credit card receipts. Chase spokeswoman Tynnetta McIntosh on St. Thomas said Wednesday, "I have no confirmation of the amount. Right now, I have no comment except to say the matter is under investigation."
McIntosh said the bank's security division is conducting its own investigation into the matter.
Westin general manager Greg Lundberg was not available for comment Wednesday. His secretary said he was busy all day with meetings.
